Things to Do in Sri Lanka

From Sigiriya's ancient rock fortress to the tea hills of Ella - the essential sights, and how to keep your own record of them.

Travel guide - last updated September 2026

Sri Lanka packs ancient cities, hill-country tea plantations, safari parks and beaches into an island small enough to loop in two to three weeks. The classic route runs from the Cultural Triangle in the north-center down through the hill country to the southern beaches and Yala's wildlife, connected by Sri Lanka's famously scenic (if slow) train lines. Here are 8 places worth building a trip around.

Top attractions

The sights most first-time visitors build an itinerary around.

🏛️

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

A 5th-century royal citadel built atop a 200-meter granite rock, with frescoes and a mirror wall surviving along the climb. Go early to beat both heat and crowds on the exposed stairway.

📍 Sigiriya

🚉 The nearest railway is at Habarana, 15km away; buses run from Dambulla to the Sigiriya junction, then a tuk-tuk covers the last 2km to the ticket office and the climb.

🚂

Ella & Hill Country Tea Trail

Rolling tea plantations around Ella and Nuwara Eliya, best seen from the train between Kandy and Ella - regularly cited as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world.

📍 Ella & Nuwara Eliya

🚉 Nearest station: Ella, on the Kandy-Badulla line - the ride up through the tea country from Kandy or Nanu Oya is one of the world's great train journeys, and the Nine Arch Bridge is a 25-minute walk from the platform.

🐘

Yala National Park

Sri Lanka's most visited national park, with one of the highest leopard densities in the world alongside elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles - jeep safaris run at dawn and dusk when animals are most active.

📍 Southern Province

🚉 Tissamaharama is the base town, about an hour by bus from Matara station; jeep safaris are booked there and enter through the Palatupana gate at dawn.

🏰

Galle Fort

A Dutch colonial fort on the southern coast, its ramparts and cobblestone streets now home to boutique shops, cafes and guesthouses within the old walls.

📍 Galle

🚉 Nearest station: Galle, on the coastal line from Colombo, about 10 minutes' walk from the fort ramparts - the coastal train is slower than the expressway bus but far better looking.

🦷

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy

Home to what's believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha, and the centerpiece of the Esala Perahera festival each July or August, one of Asia's most elaborate processions.

📍 Kandy

🚉 Nearest station: Kandy, a 15-minute walk around the lake to the temple - trains from Colombo Fort take about three hours and should be booked ahead for reserved seats.

🏖️

Mirissa & Southern Beaches

Mirissa is Sri Lanka's best-known base for whale watching (blue whales are regularly sighted November-April) alongside a straightforward beach-town stay.

📍 Mirissa

🚉 Nearest station: Weligama, 10 minutes by tuk-tuk from Mirissa beach, on the southern coastal line; whale-watching boats leave from Mirissa harbour before dawn.

🌋

Adam's Peak

A pilgrimage mountain climbed overnight by pilgrims of several religions to reach the summit for sunrise, where a shadow phenomenon called the 'Spectre of the Brocken' is sometimes visible.

📍 Central Province

🚉 Nearest station: Hatton, on the hill-country line, then a bus or tuk-tuk to Dalhousie for the overnight climb - the pilgrimage season runs December to May, when the steps are lit.

🐘

Udawalawe National Park

A more reliable park than Yala for elephant sightings specifically, with an elephant transit home nearby that rehabilitates orphaned calves before release.

📍 Udawalawe, Southern Province

🚉 Buses from Colombo and Matara stop at Udawalawe junction, a few kilometres from the park gate, where jeeps wait; the elephant transit home nearby has scheduled feeding times worth timing the visit around.

Planning questions

How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?

10-14 days lets you cover the Cultural Triangle, hill country and a southern safari-and-beach stretch without rushing, using the train network for the scenic legs.

What's the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different coasts at different times - roughly December-March is dry on the south and west coasts, while May-September is dry in the north and east, so timing depends on your route.

Is Sri Lanka good for a first-time visit?

Yes - it's compact and well set up for independent travel, with English widely understood in tourist areas, though hiring a driver for parts of the trip is common and often makes long, winding hill-country roads easier.

Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival, a straightforward online application processed in a few days for most short tourist stays. Check the official visa information for your nationality: eta.gov.lk.

What are some things to do in Sri Lanka on a tight budget?

Local rice-and-curry meals are cheap and filling, the scenic train between Kandy and Ella is inexpensive for what it covers, and Galle Fort's ramparts and streets cost nothing to wander.

Can I rent a car in Sri Lanka, and what licence do I need?

You can, but hiring a car with a driver is the norm and costs little more - roads are busy, and the trains and buses cover the classic routes beautifully anyway. Self-drive requires a temporary Sri Lankan licence, obtained by presenting your home licence and an International Driving Permit to the Automobile Association of Ceylon or the Department of Motor Traffic; your own licence alone is not valid. Traffic drives on the left. Tuk-tuk rental is popular with visitors and needs the same recognition process. The recognition permit is issued by the Automobile Association of Ceylon at aaceylon.lk, with official visitor information from Sri Lanka Tourism at srilanka.travel; drivers and cars are arranged through hotels and local operators.
