🇱🇷From surfing at Robertsport to rainforest wildlife in Sapo National Park - the essential sights, and how to keep your own record of them.
Travel guide - last updated September 2026
Liberia was founded in 1847 by freed and formerly enslaved African Americans, a history still visible in Monrovia's architecture and street names. Decades of civil war significantly set back its tourism development, but the country has stabilized considerably, and its Atlantic coast surf breaks and rainforest reserves are increasingly drawing independent travelers. Here are 4 places worth building a trip around.
The sights most first-time visitors build an itinerary around.
A fishing town with some of West Africa's best and most consistent surf breaks, drawing a small but dedicated surfing community to an otherwise quiet coastal setting.
📍 Robertsport
🚉 The surf town is 130km north-west of Monrovia, three to four hours by shared taxi on a road that is paved most of the way - the point breaks are a short walk from the town.
Liberia's largest protected rainforest area, part of the Upper Guinean forest, home to pygmy hippos, forest elephants and chimpanzees.
📍 Sapo National Park, southeastern Liberia
🚉 Liberia's rainforest park is in the south-east near Greenville: the road from Monrovia takes two days in the dry season, and visits must be arranged with the Forestry Development Authority.
Liberia's capital, named after US President James Monroe, with a National Museum and visible reminders of both its founding history and its recent civil war.
📍 Monrovia
🚉 The capital has no formal public transport: shared taxis and keke tricycles cover it, and Broad Street, Waterside market and the beaches are the fixed points.
A palm-lined beach near Monrovia, a common weekend escape from the capital with a more developed resort presence than most of Liberia's coastline.
📍 Near Monrovia
🚉 Kendeja is 20 minutes east of central Monrovia on the road to Roberts International airport, reached by taxi - the resort beaches there are the safest for swimming near the city.
In MyPassportStory, every country you mark - visited, lived in, or still on the list - becomes a stamp like these in your own travel passport. Add the cities you stopped in, draw the route between them, and turn the whole trip into a shareable passport-style image.
Open MyPassportStoryA week suits Monrovia, Robertsport's surf, and a visit to Sapo National Park, given the more limited road infrastructure connecting them.
November-April is the dry season and the most comfortable time to visit. The wet season (May-October) brings very heavy rain, among the highest rainfall totals in West Africa.
It's manageable but rewards preparation - tourism infrastructure remains limited outside Monrovia and Robertsport, and English as the official language helps for independent travel.
Most nationalities need a visa, arranged in advance through an embassy or an e-visa application. Check the official visa information for your nationality: mofa.gov.lr.
Robertsport's surf and beaches are free to enjoy, local Liberian food is inexpensive, and shared taxis between towns cost less than private hire.
Rental exists in Monrovia and almost always comes with a driver, which is the sensible arrangement - roads outside the capital vary from good tarmac to deep laterite mud, and the rainy season from May to October cuts off large areas. A foreign licence with an International Driving Permit is accepted for visits, and the minimum age is generally 25. A 4x4 is essential for anything beyond the coastal highway. Confirm current requirements with a Liberian embassy before travelling.
