Things to Do in Fiji

From the Mamanuca Islands' overwater bungalows to Fiji's Coral Coast - the essential sights, and how to keep your own record of them.

Travel guide - last updated September 2026

Fiji is over 330 islands, and the vast majority of visitors never leave the western side - Nadi as the arrival point, and the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands a short boat ride offshore for the classic South Pacific resort experience. Suva and the more remote eastern islands see far fewer tourists and offer a different, more local pace. Here are 6 places worth building a trip around.

Top attractions

The sights most first-time visitors build an itinerary around.

🏝️

Mamanuca Islands

A chain of small islands off Nadi, easily reached by day boat, with resorts ranging from backpacker-friendly to luxury overwater bungalows - the setting for several scenes in the film Cast Away.

📍 Mamanuca Islands, off Nadi

🚉 Catamarans leave Denarau Marina near Nadi through the day, reaching the nearer Mamanuca islands in 30 to 90 minutes - resorts meet the boat, and seaplanes cover the same run in minutes.

🌊

Yasawa Islands

A more remote, less developed chain further from Nadi, connected by a single daily catamaran (the Yasawa Flyer) that island-hops between resorts - a common multi-island itinerary for a longer stay.

📍 Yasawa Islands

🚉 The Yasawa Flyer catamaran runs daily from Denarau up the chain, taking four to five hours to the top - it is the only scheduled service, and resorts collect guests by longboat from the ship.

🏖️

Coral Coast

A stretch of Viti Levu's southern coast between Nadi and Suva, with reef-protected lagoons calmer than the open-ocean beaches elsewhere, and several resorts offering cultural village visits.

📍 Coral Coast, Viti Levu

🚉 Local buses run the Queens Road between Nadi and Suva, stopping at the Coral Coast resorts - the journey takes two to three hours and the open-sided buses are cheap and slow.

🤿

Diving in the Somosomo Strait

Off Taveuni Island, regularly ranked among the best soft coral diving in the world, with the Rainbow Reef as its best-known site.

📍 Taveuni Island

🚉 The Rainbow Reef is off Taveuni: fly from Nadi or Suva to Matei, or take the ferry from Suva, and dive boats then run from the island's resorts to the strait.

🏛️

Suva

Fiji's capital and the largest city in the South Pacific, with a colonial-era old town, the Fiji Museum, and a considerably more local, less touristed atmosphere than the western resort coast.

📍 Suva

🚉 Suva is the capital and ferry hub, four hours from Nadi by bus; the municipal market, the Fiji Museum and the seafront are walkable from the central bus stand.

💦

Sigatoka Sand Dunes & Bouma Falls

Sigatoka's shifting dune system on the Coral Coast holds some of Fiji's oldest archaeological finds; Bouma Falls on Taveuni is a set of three accessible waterfalls with natural swimming pools.

📍 Sigatoka, Coral Coast & Taveuni

🚉 The dunes are 20 minutes from Sigatoka town on the Queens Road bus route; Bouma is on Taveuni, an island away, reached by carrier truck from Matei along the coast road.

Planning questions

How many days do you need in Fiji?

A week suits Nadi plus the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands well. Ten days lets you add Suva or a further-flung island like Taveuni for diving.

What's the best time to visit Fiji?

May-October is the dry season and the most popular time to visit, with lower humidity than the wetter months. Cyclone season runs roughly November-April, peaking January-March.

Is Fiji good for a first-time visit?

Yes - Nadi and the nearby island resorts are well set up for tourism, with English widely spoken and inter-island boat transfers easy to book through any resort.

Do I need a visa to visit Fiji?

Many nationalities, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of the EU, can visit visa-free for short tourist stays (typically up to 4 months); other nationalities need a visa arranged in advance. Check the official visa information for your nationality: immigration.gov.fj.

What are some things to do in Fiji on a tight budget?

Staying at a backpacker-oriented island resort in the Yasawas costs considerably less than a luxury overwater bungalow while offering similar scenery, local Fijian markets in Nadi and Suva are cheap for food and produce, and the Yasawa Flyer catamaran is a budget-friendly way to island-hop compared to private transfers.

Can I rent a car in Fiji, and what licence do I need?

You can on Viti Levu, the main island, and it is useful for the Coral Coast and the highlands - but most of what visitors come for is on other islands reached by boat or plane, where cars are irrelevant. A foreign licence in English is valid for visits; otherwise carry an International Driving Permit or a certified translation. Minimum age is generally 21 to 25. Traffic drives on the left, the Kings Road around the north is partly unsealed, and village speed limits are strictly enforced.
